HAN Koch - Portrait

HAN Koch does not imitate reality in his work, nor does he reduce its essence to geometric shapes, but roams freely in interspaces achieving a sophisticated mode of expression in his image making.

His painting is neither overly intellectual nor entirely emotionally driven. He speaks with an accessible voice, taking visual impressions and transforming them into a pictorial language.

His paintings do not require explanation. As you enter and experience them, they enable you to free up your own fantasies.

(G.Muche)

After trying out various figurative styles, HAN approached geometric abstraction again in his new creative period from the beginning of the nineties. This shows his vital interest in constructive-concrete art as well as in architecture, space, perspective and light.
With its Quad-®-Art, HAN develops shape variants from a single basic constellation: the square. He does not use this geometric shape as an architectural element, but rather as a striking ornament, which results in a fixed composition of the bands on the surface and always appears very static and balanced.
HAN reduces the natural quality of his earlier works to signaling words and places them on schematically structured surfaces. The use of this standardized, geometric form implies methodical image economy. It also creates an insight into the form of the procedure, stimulates thought, enables ambiguities or contradictions. The picture elements are restricted to colored stripes that interlock. They spread in a horizontal and vertical direction. Calm color strips in alternating tones dominate. Their order is not determined by any scheme. It only follows the strength of the color weights.
With its Quad-®-Art, HAN is one of the most important representatives of the new geometric painting. One can see these works as an interesting synthesis of constructivism and concept art. It is the art of our century and the meaning of its variable conception is far from exhausted.
